When touring Ecuador, the weather is highly unpredictable . Ecuador features diverse microclimates, ranging from Amazonian rainforests to high-altitude Andean peaks. You may experience intense sunshine, heavy rain, and sudden drops in temperature all in a single day.
FROM QUITO TO THE NORTHERN AMAZON BY PRIVATE CAR
Departing Quito: Leaving Quito at 7:30am, your route travels east, climbing steeply through the valleys of Cumbayá and Pifo. You will reach the high, windswept alpine tundra known as the páramo at the Papallacta Pass, which sits at a breath-taking altitude of 4,000 meters (13,120 feet)
Antisana volcano views: : On a clear morning your will witness the massive, glaciated peak of Antisana Volcano (5,704 meters). With luck you will spot the endangered wild Andean Condor soaring over the high plains.
Papallacta hot springs: Descending slightly to 3,250 meters, you arrive at the village of Papallacta. Here, you will spend a wonderful relaxing time at the beautiful oasis featuring pristine, mineral-rich thermal pools.
Magic Waterfall: You leave the high Andes behind and begin descending. The landscape shifts rapidly from rocky grasslands into the dense, moss-draped cloud forests.
We will stop at the Rio Malo river crossing to visit the hidden Cascada Mágica (Magic Waterfall). A short, easy 10-minute walk from the roadside leads you straight into a natural amphitheater where this mighty 70-meter wall of water thunders down.
Reventador Volcano: As you approach the transition zone between the Andes foothills and the lowlands, you enter the active territory of Reventador Volcano. Reventador is one of Ecuador's most continuously active volcanoes. From the safety of the main highway and with a clear day you can look out across the valley to see its dark, ash-strewn cone frequently venting pillars of steam and gas into the sky.
Arrival at Lago Agrio city (4 - 5 pm): You will arrive in Lago Agrio (officially known as Nueva Loja), a bustling jungle frontier city built on the oil and ecological history of the northern Amazon.
Lago Agrio marks the conclusion of your overland road tour, but it is the beginning of the deeper Amazon experience.
There is plenty of good hotels in Lago Agrio. You will spend the night here. Next day we will pick you up to start your fantastic journey to one of our wonderful tours deeper in the Amazon Rainforest.
